Become steady, calm and emotionally strong!
Over the last year, I have shared with you many NeuroMindSHIFT tips and techniques to calm the chaos and become steady, calm and emotionally strong in our busy and chaotic world.
What do these NeuroMindSHIFT techniques really do?
While they appear quite simple these techniques are reshaping and sculpting your brain to be resilient, resourceful, focused, happier, less anxious, less overwhelmed, and help you to “bounce back quickly when life bucks you off!” We all experience moments when life “bucks you off” in traffic, while standing in line, the impending deadline, and the race of our daily schedules! Busy, busy, busy and not enough time is our mantra!
How do the NeuroMindSHIFT techniques help to decrease this anxiety and stress?
Likely you have experienced a time when you felt frustrated, (perhaps while driving, or standing in line thinking “I’m going to be late! I’m in a hurry! Just get out of my way! I’ve got too much to do!”). You can feel your heart pounding, your body tensing, your hands get sweaty, and your mind is racing. The way that you are feeling is part of the “fight, flight or freeze” response that is mobilizing your body to face an external threat.
This “fight, flight or freeze” response was essential for our ancient ancestors who saw the threat of a saber tooth tiger. Today many of us experience this dramatic response when we feel even just a little anxious, frustrated, or worried.
This response begins in the almond-shaped amygdala of your brain. The amygdala is like a smoke detector that is on high alert for anything that might negatively affect us. Once the amygdala finds something to focus on it will release neurochemicals throughout the body that then excites the amygdala even more. This cycle continues with our everyday stressors of deadlines, traffic and busy schedules.
We cannot always control the events that affect us but we can change how we react to them. In fact, when we can control our reactions we can change our brains, through the science of neuroplasticity. Here is where our NeuroMindSHIFT techniques come into play!
Rather than become stressed out in traffic, put out the APB – gain awareness, pause, breathe and use one of the NeuroMindSHIFT techniques to put out the fire the amygdala is trying to ignite. Over time the negative, anxious, frustrated neural connections that have combined in response to the excessive activity of the amygdala break apart and the steady, calm, resilience you feel when using one of the NeuroMindSHIFT techniques rewires the brain for a positive, happier, resourceful outlook and response.
