Singing Christmas songs can help ease any chaos that you may be feeling.
A couple weeks ago I shared with you how taking deep breaths and partially closing the glottis can initiate the vagus nerve, which can help to create a sense of calm in the midst of your chaotic day. It is especially useful in this busy stress filled season of Christmas. Another way to initiate the vagus nerve for focus and a calming effect is by toning.
Toning isn’t just about Strengthening Muscles!
Toning is making sounds with elongated vowels like OHM or sounds like Ahhhhhhhhh, or extending the length of the word Amen or by singing a Christmas tune!
Dr. Amen tells us in Change Your Brain Change Your Life, that toning balances brain waves, deepens the breath, reduces the heart rate, and imparts a general sense of wellbeing.
When toning take a deep breath in and as you exhale hold the “O” part of the Ohm for at least four seconds then proceed to the “M” for eight seconds.
At first it may feel strange and perhaps the sound initially will not be strong and long. But as you continue to do this you will feel more confident and will be able to hold the sound and feel it resonate within your chest and relax the entire body.
So sing! Sing your favourite Christmas songs and enjoy this season of peace, love, joy and hope.
And from my home to yours Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! I love the story of the “Christmas Guest” and so I recorded it for you to enjoy in this season. Take a moment for yourself to relax breathe and enjoy the recording.
