When you are experiencing anxiety, do not force, but rather gently bring your focus back with a mantra.
In my last blog I mentioned the use of a mantra in harmony with the breath to calm the chaos and refocus your thinking. A mantra focuses and protects the mind from distraction and negativity and can transform your energy, breath, and mind.
I use a single word and repeat it again and again so that when my mind tries to run off with me, I can bring it back to focus and calm. I often just repeat —“peace peace peace”. This helps you focus the mind and breath rather than letting it run away with you like a runaway team of horses.
It is not meant to feel forced or cause anxiety but to gently add focus to your being. It is not about striving or perfection. We are human and the mind will certainly be drawn to thoughts and emotions. Just observe the thoughts that enter your mind and let them flow and go. Try not to overreact or be hard on yourself. Ordering yourself to “pay attention” will not get you anywhere. Gently bring your awareness back by focusing on your breath and letting the mantra flow.
Begin practicing in short sessions. Just focus on the breath for one minute even, but do this often throughout the day. Practice this when you feel that you are becoming tense then start to focus on the breath. Release the negative thoughts that may be racing through your mind and say your mantra with your breath.
It is the purpose of this meditative practice to bring your awareness and focus into everyday life not just when you have the perfect meditative environment. It is meant to offer peace, relief, and hope to every moment, which takes mindfulness and purposefully connecting yourself to your awareness.
The more often you bring this focus to everyday life, the more easily you will engage this practice in times of rising emotions, as your physical body begins to tense or when your thoughts become fixed on negative, self-defeating, and deprecating messages within your mind.
